Disaster Preparedness Letter

(Printer Friendly Version)
May 14, 2008

Dear Sacred Heart Parents:

As part of Sacred Heart School's ongoing disaster preparedness, there are three actions that parents must complete to fulfill enrollment requirements:

Your child's enrollment is not complete without these items.

Emergency Information Form

Sacred Heart School requests that each year each family also fill out the Emergency Information Form*. Sacred Heart will provide the photos. The names of all authorized pick-up persons are required, in advance, for your child to be allowed to leave during an emergency. It is imperative that each family have an emergency plan and discuss it with everyone involved.

Authorization to Administer Oral Medication

Sacred Heart's second request could easily be overlooked, but for some children it is vital. We need pertinent medical information for your child. It is possible that your child could be here three days or more and will require his or her medication. If this is the case, please complete and return Authorization for the Administration of Oral Medication Form* and send a supply of your child's medication. It will be kept in the disaster container. Do not assume that any medications that are kept in the school buildings will be accessible.

• Is your child taking any medication on an ongoing basis?

• Please send in a 72-hour supply of medication(s) in prescription container(s).

Emergency Preparedness Comfort Pack

In September, a Ziploc bag labeled with your child’s name will be sent home. Sacred Heart is prepared to provide your child with the basic necessities (water, space blankets, food, first aid, shelter), however you can help by adding some extras for your child. Please only send what will fit into the gallon size Ziploc bag; and write a comfort letter to each of your children and seal it in the bag, as well (description of comfort letter follows). This year’s Ziploc bag will be sent home with your child at the end of the year. The following items are suggestions made by the Bellevue Fire Department:

  • Gloves

  • Heavy socks

  • Small stuffed animal

  • Small game

  • Small flashlight

Also to be included in the Comfort Pack is a “comfort letter” to each of your children and sealed it in their Ziploc bag. The American Red Cross guidelines ask that your child have a letter from you supporting him or her in case you are delayed with pick up in an emergency. It is also recommended to enclose a family snapshot in your letter. These letters will be stored with class packets in the large container on the "Lower" parking lot. The letters will be stored separately from the Ziploc bags. They will only be used in case of a disaster such as an earthquake. We will keep the letters year-to-year, unless you request differently. So if we have your child's comfort letter from last year, it is not necessary to send another one. When you write your letter, you might include the following points:

  • A reminder that you love your child very much.

  • You understand your child’s fears; it is natural to be scared.

  • The teachers at Sacred Heart really care about him or her and the staff knows what to do in an emergency.

  • Your family pet instinctively knows how to take care of itself.

  • You are on your way to get him or her, but you may be delayed because of traffic.

  • Anything else you believe would reassure your child -- personal, religious, or otherwise encouraging.
