Code of Conduct
Student Responsibilities
It is the student’s responsibility to participate in the educational program of the school, to help maintain an orderly learning environment and to in no way deprive other students of their right to an education.
Each student has the responsibility to:
- Model Christian behavior in all interactions.
- Discuss any acts of bullying, fighting or abuse toward students, school/parish property with his/her teacher, parent, and/or administration.
- Obey all school rules and policies.
- Show up on time and be prepared for class.
- Behave in a respectful and friendly manner toward all school and parish personnel, volunteers and visitors.
- Respect all property including but not limited to books, desks, bathrooms, school and parish buildings, and playground.
- Never leave school grounds without written permission from a parent/guardian and the principal/designee.
- Encourage behavior in fellow students which upholds these standards.
School Safety, Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying
Sacred Heart School is committed to a safe and civil educational environment for all students, employees, volunteers, and patrons, free from harassment, intimidation, or bullying.
At Sacred Heart School, Bullying, Intimidation and Harassment are defined as follows:
- Engaging in behavior that results in the embarrassment or denigration of another person on or off school grounds, including written, verbal, electronic, or physical behavior;
- Physically harming a student or damaging another student’s property;
- Behavior that is perceived by the recipient as creating an intimidating, threatening or emotionally harmful environment.
- Behavior has the effect of substantially interfering with the student’s education;
- Behavior has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the school.
Additionally, the student being harassed does not have to actually have the characteristics they are being harassed about, i.e. if a student is called a derogatory name, it is harassment whether or not the student actually possesses that trait.
Bullying, intimidation, or harassment of any kind is not tolerated. The staff of Sacred Heart School will investigate all complaints of bullying, intimidation, or harassment. Students involved in bullying, intimidation, or harassment face detention, suspension, and/or expulsion.
Participation in online social networks and user-driven sites, such as, but not limited to, YouTube.com®, MySpace.com®, Wikipedia.com, Xanga®, Friendster®, etc. may result in disciplinary actions if the content of the student’s entries includes pictures without permission and/or defamatory comments regarding the school, the faculty, other students, the parish, or members thereof.
Parent Responsibilities
The greatest influence on a child’s thinking and behavior is his/her parents; the school cannot attain its educational goal without active support from the parents.
Each parent has the responsibility to:
- Model Christian behavior in all interactions, including modeling the Student Code of Conduct.
- Recognize that the parents have the primary role in their child’s education.
- Foster in the child a Christ-like concern for all classmates.
- Read, understand, and uphold the rules and policies of the school.
- Support and respect the authority and decisions of the school personnel.
- Help students develop a mature attitude of responsibility for their own belongings and the property of others.
- Encourage a positive attitude towards self and learning.
- Guide the child in becoming a responsible caring Christian.
